PROPOSED MERGER.

NELSON TRANSPORT SERVICES. EFFECT ON FRUIT INDUSTRY. Per Press Association. NELSON, Dec. 14. An inquiry into the possible effect on the fruit industry of the proposed merger in the Nelson district of goods transport services was held to-day, when Mr T. H. Langford, of the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, was chairman. The evidence took three and a-half hours to give and covered a wide range of points in respect to the fruit industry and the policy of amalgamation of transport services. Requests were made by representatives of various bodies to state their case, and it soon became apparent that a more general inquiry into the whole matter of transport services would be desirable and necessary if all those interested were to be given an opportunity of expressing their viewpoints. 'At the conclusion of the meeting a motion was carried requesting the Minister of Transport (Hon, R. Semple) to arrange for a commission of inquiry to investigate fully the whole question of transport by road, rail, and sea in the Nelson district, and that an opportunity be given all sections of the community to give evidence.
