ATTACK ON NANKING

JAPANESE ONSLAUGHT. STUBBORN RESISTANCE. COUNTRYSIDE AFLAME. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received December 10, 11.10 a.m. NANKING, Dec. 9. The Chinese are throwing a new boom across the Yangtse-Kiang River near Kiukian. The Japanese launched attack after attack against the' walls of Nanking which were all stubbornly crushed back. When night fell over the city the countryside was spurting flame. The gallant defenders looked down on heaps of Japanese dead and hundreds of ’ wounded crawling from the wall into Nanking pleading for succour, which was unavailable. Chinese armed with petrol bombs are continuing to destroy buildings likely to afford cover for the enemy. The occupants look on hopelessly as their homes are given to the fire. Kiukiang is on the Yangtse River between Hankow and Nanking.
