CALF CLUBS

CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS. JUDGING AT SHOWGROUNDS. Parading their animals for the judging of the championships of the Manawatu and Oroua. Division of the Boys’ and Girls’ Calf Club movement, a large number of children provided a spectacle at the Showgrounds today which was outstanding evidence of the interest taken in the competitition and the exceedingly high standard attained.

Groomed like Royal Show champions, the great majority of the entries gave evidence of untiring attention, while the condition of the animals showed that the same measure of care had been bestowed upon their rearing. With so many calves approaching the point of perfection, the judges were confronted with no light task. Mr S. Morgan, of Mangatokj, Taranaki, was the judge for dairy type and Mr H. It. Denize, of the Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North, the judge for care in rearing. The supervisors were Messrs W. J. Croucher, of Palmerston North, and Mr H. It. Green, of Kairanga.

Fifty-three calves came forward for judging, in addition to eight yearlings, four two-year heifers and three mature cows. JUDGES’ COMMENTS.

Speaking of the junior care-in-rear-ing class, Mr Denize congratulated all on the very high standard attained. The winners had cared for their animals and fed them well, he said. There was very little difference in the first three ;placings,. The speaker commended the winner for her handling’ of the calf. The two first placings had retained a “bloom” to a very marked extent, and that had demonstrated careful feeding. Credit was al6o due to the instructors and supervisors for the excellence of the entries.

Referring to the senior entrants in the same division, Mr Denize said many of those which had not secured a place had been very near indeed to doing so. In good management of animals tho dominant feature was kindness and then the calves were more contented and the best results could be secured. He would not say anything about rearing, as the entrants knew all about that. He advised all the entrants to , put their animals on paddocks which had yielded hay or ensilage crops, and emphasised that all care should be taken in changing the calves’ diet, giving some advice in that respect. Mr Denize spoke in' detail of the placed calves.

The judge of dairy type, Mr Morgan, showed when ho had finished his task in what manner he had differentiated between the placed calves. The champion, he said, was as nice and clean a calf as he had seen lor a long time. The calf placed i second had not been quite as “fine,”' while the third had not shown the quality of the preceding two. There was a gratifying attendance of parents at the gathering while there were also in attendance Colonel J. H. Whyte, Mr 1. W. Mudford (members of the Wanganui Education Board), E. H. Lange (agricultural instructor of the board), W. J. Boden (senior inspector of the board), and G, V. Wild (an inspector of the Education Department, attached to the manual and technical branch). There were also present a number of judges and supervisors of various groups in the division, while Mr J. A. Bussell, president of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, was in attendance. Befreshmcnts were provided by members of the Palmerston North branch of the .Women’s Division Farmers’ Union at the conclusion of the jndg’ng, the certificates being presented then.
