DECEMBER 9, 1907,
The potato market had been very depressed and values ranged from 30s to 45s a ton. One Dunedin firm had re-shipped 200 bags to Melbourne for the reasont hat they would not realise freight and charges. A start had been made with the hoarding of boys from other towns, who had been attending the Palmerston North High School. The rector had taken six into his own house and plans were being prepared for a special building. The Railway Department had decided that tyhen the Main Trunk line was opened between Wellington and Auckland it -would have available sleeping cars for the added comfort of passengers. A Jersey cow had been sold by auction in Taranaki for £lO4. A sculling match for the world’s championship had been arranged to take place on the Wanganui River between W. Webb (holder of the title) and R. Tressider. The Premier (Sir Joseph Ward) had reported that the Colony’s total revenue for the eight months ended November 30 had been £4,959,546, as compared with £4,595,612 for November, 1906. . Two creameries in Ashhurst had been receiving 3000 gallons of milk a day. “Yet,” stated a report, “a cooperative butter factory seems as far away as ever.” In a cricket match between Australia and M.C.C. played at Brisbane Australia Ittid scored 299 in their first innings and 110 for two wickets in their second. Tlie first strike of M.C.C. had yielded 223. In honour of New Zealand’s elevation to Dominion status the Government had decided to issue special medals to school children. A tender for 170,000 medals had been accepted.
