BISHOP OF WAIAPU.
DEATH OF RT. REV. H. W WILLIAMS.
The death lias occurred at Napier of lit. Rev. Herbert William Williams, Bishop of Waiapu. Bishop Williams was born at' Wae-renga-a-hika, Poverty Bay, in 1860 and was a son of Bishop W. L. Williams, a pioneer clergyman. In 1888 he married a daughter of Mr S. L. Mason, of Edinburgh. Bishop Williams was educated at Christ’s College (Christchurch), Canterbury College and Jesus College (Cambridge). He graduated B.A. (N.Z.) in 1880, also Litt.D. and B.A. (Cantab.) in 1884, M.A. in 1887. and Litt.D. of this University. He was captain of the Rugby XV (Christ’s College and Jesus College). Later ho became assistant mathematics master at Haileybur.v College, England. In 1886 he was created a deacon and thenceforward he received rapid nromotion until in 1888 he was appointed vice-principal to the Native Theological College. Gisborne, end later principal.
B’shon Williams was superintendent of the Mao'-i mission at Ws>>apu from long to 19 0f| and Archdeacon of Waiapu for 22 years. At the end of that period he was appointed Bishop of Waiapu.
