DRAINAGE OF LAND
MANAWATU BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board was held yesterday. Those present were Trustees P. G. Mildon (chairman), D. Prouse, R. Tanner, F. J. Russell and W. E. Thomas. Apologies for absence were received from Trustees H. R. Green and J. Collis. The overseer (Mr M. Wilson) submitted the following report, which was adopted :—lmprovement work, Burke’s Drain: Approximately 70 chains of this work have been completed, and considering the ground is so very hard and dry, fair progress has been made. Mr Bailey’s recpiest: This work has been attended to. Main Drain: Work to this drain has been completed' to Whiskey Creek. Burke’s drain, cleaning and improving: This drain is re-
ceiving attention at the present time; good progress is being made. The clerk (Mr N. I. Nielsen) reported that the debit balance at November 1 had been £2623 9s 7d, and was now £2655 14s 9d. The overdraft limit was £3500. The chairman reported on negotiations as to the engagement of six men for three months through the Labour Department in order to have improvements carried out to Burke’s Drain. The men’s wages would be provided by the department paying £4 a week for each man, the boarcf providing, the rest. Mr A. A. Mitchell had agreed to make a contribution toward the cost for the drain to be 14ft. Gin. at sft. from water level. As soon as the men were available the work would be commenced.
Trustees Russell and Thomas reported adversely on requests made at a meeting of local body representatives that shares be taken up in the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Com-
pany. Trustee Russell thought'that the matter was one for consideration bv county councils. ■ At was decided to reply to the company that the board members .considered* that the board was an W. body in respect of county councils and for that reason did not wish to taKe U” shares.. , The Newburv Dairv Company advised that a concrete drain, which tlie Iward had asked to be cleaned had been attended to and would be cleaned more often in future. —The letter was received. The clerk reported that rates were coming in every day and by December 20 an appreciable sum should be received. . It was decided not to hold a meeting in January- unless special circumstances arise. , The chairman extended the season s felicitations to the board members, clerk and office staff, outside employee* and the Press. •"
