BULLS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) BULLS, Dec. 4. Arrangements have been made for members of the Bulls District Young Farmers’ Club and others interested to visit Wanganui on Tuesday next. The party will inspect places of interest. The annual general meeting of the Bulls-Ohakea Sports Club was held in Bulls, Mr C. E. Vile presiding. The iuport stated that there was a profit of £3 12s 8d on the year’s working. Inability to conduct evening sports meetings had resulted in the usual degree of local interest declining, and there were in consequence fewer nclivo members. The secretary’s action in applying for March 12, 1938, for the annual sports meeting was endorsed. Honorariums were granted the ,hon. secretary and handicappor. The secretary was instructed to make representations through Mr G. If. O. Wilson, M.P., for a Government grant towards the lighting fund. Mr Jack Preston leaves Bulls early next week to take up a higher position with , the Ashburton Dairy Co., Ltd. Mr PresI ton was for many years closely attached I to most branches of sport in Rangitikei, and represented the Wanganui union anti Rangitikei sub-union iri the field of. Rugby. He was captain, and afterwards president of the Bulls Football Club, and delegate to the sub-union. ITe also took an active part in cricket, and was a ‘‘live wire” in the sports club, while Mrs Preston was a member of the ladies’ hockey team. Mr Preston is to be congratulated on his promotion, but both he and his wife will be greatly missed. Mr T. Prichard, an erstwhile resident of Bulls, and the cham pion miniature rifle shot, appears to have gathered a good team around him in his new home at Taitinarunui, where he was instrumental in forming a club. This season Mr Prichard won the New Zealand aggregate championship, and his club was first in the Auckland club championships, second (beaten by a. point) in the Wanga--1 nui senior postal shield, and won the junior postal shield. Mr and Mrs M. R. Mansell have returned after a motor tour of the North Island, and Mr Mansell has resumed duty at the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr P. Doughty has completed a tour of England and Germany, and is now in Austria. Next week he leaves for the United States of America. His health is greatly improved as a result, ot his travels,' and he expects to return home early in the new
year. BULLS, Doc. 6. Mr J. Preston, who leaves this week for Ashburton, was tendered a farewell in the Town Hall supper room by members of the Bulls Football Club'and others. Mr R. O. S. McKenzie, president of the Wanganui Rugby Union and the Rangitikei sub-union, was in the chair, and Mr
J. E. Walker, chairman of tho Town Board, represented the townspeople. The chairman said that credit for the’successes of the Bulls senior fifteen during the season was in a great measure due to Mr Preston, the president. Mr Walker said that Mr Preston was a good citizen, and regret was felt at his impending departure. Mr N. James, captain of the Bulls seniors, spoke appreciatively of Mr Preston’s services to the club.’ Mr L. Gray, the junior captain, expressed, the regret of the players of lower grades at losing Mr Preston. Mr Preston said he found it hard to express his appreciation of the honour done rn him by such a largo gathering. He disclaimed responsibility for the club’s successes in their jubilee year, but he had done his best to encourage players. He paid a tribute to the loyalty of members, and mentioned that the thirds, who generally had to travel without a manger, always paid their transport fees. The chairman presented a suitcase and travelling rug to Mr Preston, and said that fellow members of the club joined in wishing him and Mrs Preston a happy and prosperous future. His record in _ Rugby had been a very good one, and with N. James and C. Ellery the club had had throe great forwards who could hold their own anvwhcro.
