GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI. • ORATORY GOES WELL. THE CROONER FIT. Hitting out with great freedom, they ran five furlongs in tho smart time of 1.3 3-5, alter dashing over tho first two in 24 l-&sec. Oratory, looking very fresh, finished a shade the bettor of the pair. Oratory, who was second in the Railway Handicap at Auckland last year, will again go north, and will bo piloted by B. H, Morris. Tho Bigot (Broughton), who also appeared to bo in great fettle, was not extended to encompass six furlongs in 1.-ia 3-5. He lias done well this season, and lias appreciated his light let-up after tho Riccarton meeting. Ine Bigot is entered for the Maualvatu Cup. • Silver River (Howe) was striking out well in a rousing gallop on the plough, where Noisy Night (Howe) was allowed to run seven furlongs at an easy pace. Though he has not yet fully shaken off the effects of a slight cold, the Great Northern Foal Stakes candidate Surmount was permitted to run a slow five furlongs, being sprinted for the first two, and then eased up. , „ Copy Cat (G. R. lattersall) covered five furlongs in 1.8. , ... Rangcmore (Chaplin) was let off with easy pace work. . To cover six furlongs took Royal Choice (Howe), 1.18 4-5. ( , , Hunting Loro (W. Little) and the IliadMerit filly (Tattersall) ran half a-mile in 54 2-ssce. ~, , . Catalogue (A. McDonald)-- was kept steadily at it in a solid gallop over two rounds of tho plough. He may race at tho Manawatu meeting. . With Alby (Chaplin) as a companion, The Buzzer (Broughton) was under a good hold in covering six furlongs in 1.23 \ and seven in 1.36. He is on the minimum in the Auckland Cup, in which he may have the sorvices of H. N. Wiggins in fho saddle. . Dawning Light (S. Anderson), going at three-quarter pace, took 1.21 for six furlongs. Sporting Gift (Broughton) ran five furlongs in 1.8, tho last two in 26 2-ssce. 'Merry Ruler and Aria both did threequarter pace work. Dunmanway (Broughton) continues to improve, and was kept back to Sggra (J. Leach) in covering three furlongs in 39 3-5 sec on the course proper after tho first furlong had occupied 14 l-fcec. Galloping with great dash, The ( Crooner (Tattersall) drew right away from Old Surrey (Little) at the finish of a good mile run in 1.45. The first two furlongs took 24 4-ssec, the first three 36 3-ssec, and the half-mile 51scc. Tho Crooner wa9 revelling in his work, and should bo a fit horse when lie goes north to Ellerslic. Wagner (R. Chisholm), and Florence Mills (H. Johnstone) got to the end of a fairly smart half-mile in 52 l-ssec, the last three furlongs taking 39 3-ssec. Bluffer (Little) despite being under a good hold early, finished very strongly several lengths in front of Taumau (Anderson), over seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5 after cutting out the first half-mile in 51 l-ssec. Though both were under a hold for most of the joiirney, Quadroon (Johnstone) finished better than Corroboree (Broughton), at the end of a mile run in 1.45 2-ssec. They took 27 l-sscc for the first two furlongs, 51 3-ssec for the half-mile, and 1.33 for the seven furlongs.

Moving very nicely, Bodylino (Little) cat out five furlongs in 1.4 4-5 on the course proper. Wildflower (Leach) was in front of Taillight (Anderson), at tne end of five furlongs in 1.5 3-ssec. They broke 25sec for the first two furlongs. Great Hope dashed over the last three furlongs in 38sec. Leaving half a mile behind in 54sec, Conveyor (Little), who looks well, took 39 3-ssec for tho last three furlongs.

AUSTRALIAN HORSEMAN. JOINS AWAPUNI STABLE. AN IMPRESSIVE RECORD. (By “Spectator.”) With an impressive record as a horseman, and aged only 24 years, W. Little, an Australian jockey who goes to scale at the handy weight of 7.8, has joined Mrs A. W. McDonald’s stable at Awapuni, and will bo riding at Woodvillc on Saturday. He arrived in New Zealand last week, and attended the Otaki race mooting, but did not ride there. During riding work at the Awapuni track this morning Little showed himself to be a very capable horseman, and he should not want for engagements. During an apprenticeship of three years which he served with L. J. McCann, of Caulfield, Little rode 150 winners, and bo then went to India to ride for the Earl of Shannon, piloting winners at Madras, Bangalore, Mysore, Poona and Bombay. The Bombay course is reputedly the best in the world, with only one turn in' races up to a mile, and a wide tan track on the outside of the grass course. Returning to India the next year. Little had a vory successful season with A. Higgins, and then he went back to Melbourne, but recently decided to come to New Zealand. Ho has won races on every course of note in Victoria, including Elomirigton; won a double at Caulfield on Count Ito and Opera Bag, and in India won three important races on Lady Brendan RIDING ENGAGEMENTS’ - Riding engagements so far announced for the Woodvillc meeting are:—■ W. ,T.
