EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” DECEMBER 6, 1907.
.Fire liad destroyed the' main block at Parliament Buildings. There were no insurances and "the loss to the State had been particularly heavy. It had been stated in evidence at the hearing of the famr labourers’ dispute that a cow running on 1} acres of land would return to its owner £l2 a year, while the ordinary number of sheep on 11 acres would only return £4 10s in twelve months. The fear had been expressed that higher farm wages would drive the dairy farmer to run sheep with heavy consequent loss to the Colony. A public hall, a post office, and footpaths were being provided in Apiti which, according to a report, had become a very prosperous township. River erosion had caused serious concern in the Manawatu each year, large areas of valuable land , being ruined. The Government had granted £4OOO to subsidise protective work. The Department of Labour had reported that there was no unemployment in Palmerston North. Lieut. Shaekleton (later Sir Ernest) had arrived in New Zealand in readiness for his Antarctic expedition. The Kaiser had sent Miss Florence Nightingale a bounuet in recognition of her great nursing service. The Foxton Gas Proorietary had accepted a tender for the installation of a nae-plant in the borough. A big' nartv had left for Tahiti to witness the eclipse of the sun. which was due to occur on January 3.
