OBITUARY.

MR MICHAEL CAVANAGH. Another of Wanganui’s pioneer settlers, Mr Michael Cavanagh, passed away at his home at W angaehu last week. Mr Cavanagh was aged 86 at the time of his death, and had resided just on 70 years in New' Zealand. As a youth of 18, he left ms native home, in Woodford, County Gahvay, Ireland, to come in a sailing ship to New Zeaianu.. Arriving in Auckland, and seeing the troubled state of the country, Mr Cavanagh joined the Armed Constabulary, and served with this force during many exciting periods. He was one of the force which took part in the seige of Pariliaka. When the natives were pacified, Mr Cavanagh worked on railway construction, in the Waikato, and also in the Manawatu Gorge. The deceased gentleman was married in Hawera at the age of 33, and with his wife went to the Wanganui district, where he began his farming career.

At the time of the Kimberley gold rush, Mr Cavanagh, who was then a young man, set out from New Zealand for the famous gold area, and many an exciting tale he would enjoy relating his experiences around Australia in those., days. Mr Cavanagh is survived by his wife and five sons, Messrs. Jim, Jack, and Desmond (Wangaehu), Daniel (Auckland), and Patrick'(Palmerston North). :>
