EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” NOVEMBER 29, 1907. During the past month the SansonFoxton tramway had carried 49 tons of grain, 45i tons of minerals, 29J tons of manure, 167 tons of merchandise, and 47,300 ft. of timber. Passengers’ fares had amounted to £5 17s 2d. At the first day of the Feilding races bookmakers had been absent, having refused the club’s charge of £2O each. The report -had stated: “The roar of the ring was not heard; every provision had been made for the pencillers, but the cage was there without the birds.” November 29 had been the 27th anniversary of the establishment of the “Standard.” The founder, Mr Alex McMinnn, had written to tlie company: “Let me offer my congratulations on the evidences of substantial progress, as the paper lias a particularly healthy appearance.” It had been stated that when the Main Trunk line was completed it would be possible to travel from Wellington to Auckland in 20 hours. The second-class fare was to be 21s, single. Cr. R. W Brown had been re-elect-ed chairman of the Pohangina County Council and Cr J. G. (later Sir James) Wilson had been' re-elected chairman of the Manawatu County Council.
