THE LIBRARY.

. (To the Editor.) Sir, —I read with interest the comments from a visitor on our Public Library in iast Thursday’s 'Standard,” firstly because I take a keen interest in the institution and secondly I consider there is room for improvement. Take the subscription for instance—l2s for non ratepayers, 10s for ratepayers. I am classed as the former as I only rent a house (my position preventing me from purchasing). I pay rent regularly which covers the mortgage, insurance and rates; yes I am a ratepayer indirectly through my landlord, yet I am penalised an extra 2s. The owner of my house is probably renting the house lie is living in at present; and although he is only a tenant similar to myself he pays a 10s subscription. Surely it is time this antiquated and unequal system was abolished. I was also disagreeably surprised to find the institution closes at midday each Saturday, usually the busiest period for the Library of any day of the week. Surely a city of the size of Palmerston North can afford to have the institution open every Saturday till the ordinary closing time of the week daj's, which, by the way, I consider should be extended till 9 p.m. Although one is loath to draw comparisons, the Wanganui Library could show the local one a few good points, and I suggest a temporary exchange of assistants would be exceedingly beneficial to Palmerston North. Finally, reduce the subscription, improve the conditions, and then appeal for more subscribers: There is too much competition nowadays to expect new members to enrol without inducement. After all 1500 subscribers at 8s are better than 1000 at 12s for any public library. Start a bumper campaign ; have cards printed; give them to subscribers, inviting the readers to give a library subscription for Christmas, and believe me it’s worth while trying. I trust this will be lead u. the light of helpful criticism, as I for one would like to see the conditions improved.— I am, etc., A SUBSCRIBER. 27/11/37.
