FEILDING RACES.
THREE AWAPUNI WINNERS. FIRST DAY’S EVENTS. STAKES TO RARATONGA. (By ’‘Spectator.”) Three winners, Raratonga, Hunting Queen and Florence Mills, were provided in a row by Awapuni stables, besides gaining three second placings, on the first day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting, which was held under beautiful weather conditions on Saturday. The totalisator handled £20,259 10s, compared with £17,072 10s for the first day of the corresponding meeting last year, an increase of £3,187. The turnover was over twice as great as the first day total (£10.065 10s) in 1935. There was an exceptionally large attendance and the track was in perfecl'order, the going being fast. Cat parking facilities were ideal, and the 700 cars on the grounds were handled with the greatest efficiency. Subsequent to the last race a protest was lodged by C. Slieild, rider of Onewhetu, the second horse, against F. Latham, the rider of the winner, Airing, on the ground of alleged interference but the judicial committee, after an inquiry, found no reason to alter the placings. , Descriptions of races additional to those which appeared in the first edition of the “Standard” on Saturday are as follow: SUCCESS REPEATED. Winner of the same event last year, Tiger Gain showed that he had struck form by winning the Manchester Handicap from end to end. Never headed after he went to the front from Taitoru and Corroboree, passing through the straight for the first time, he finished very resolutely to hold off determined challenges by a neck from Brazen King and The Buzzer. Tiger Gain had charge crossing the top from Corroboree, with Quadroon on the inside, while Brazen King was commencing a fast run from the rear. Corroboree began to lade in the_ run home, and Brazen King, running a fine race for a fresh horse, challenged very strongly, but failed by a neck to catch the leader. The Buzzer, who was third, was evidently not forward enough, but hung on in a hard finish. Hozoor was fourth with Tahurangi and Quadroon next. MATA HARI’S TURN. Mata Hari, who looked verv well when paraded, proved equal to win- | ning the open sprint. Though a little slow at the start, she was soon in the leading bunch and, after being in charge as they approached the furn? stayed there.to the end to win by halt {
a length from Wildflower, who received the worst of the start. Lady Ina, the favourite, was never prominent a.nd finished fifth behind Relative and Deficit. Clessamor also disappointed. DUEL IN STAKES. From the start the Feilding J ttvenile Stakes resolved itself into a duel between Minga and Raratonga, the two favourites, who established a break on the field and, three lengths clear of the others, battled it out right to the post. Minga was actually the first out of the barrier, and had the inside running, but Raratonga, responding to pressure, got in front in the last few strides to snatch the verdict by half a head.
Toa-iti ran a very good race, and at the foot of the straight came fast in a gallant attempt to close the gap to the leaders but, after threatening momentarily on the outside, he was beaten, and finished a nose in front of Dunnianway. Raratonga, who ran third at Trentham, lias improved considerably in the interim, and has developed into a fine stamp of two-year-old. HUNTING QUEEN SCORES. Returning to form again, Hunting Queen staged a great finish with Middle in the Kowhai Hack Handicap to score by a neck after forging through the field in the straight. Middle was in the van all the way after being first out of the barrier. Imposture, on the rails, was the early leader from Bonny Glow, Ned Cuttle, Ngatirahiri and Middle, and theso were the lending bunch at the straight entrance. Winsome Lu, from the rear of the field, had made a fast run round the turn, but had too much ground to make up, though she threatened danger momentarily, as did Galteemore, who finished fourth, a head behind Bonny Glow, and ahead of Ngatirahiri, Ned Cuttle and Winsome Lu. AN IMPRESSIVE WIN. Florence Mills, having the second start of her career for her second wm, showed how good she was by winning, pulling up, by two lengths from a good field in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap in time equal to that of the open sprint, despite the fact that she came home very easily from Silver River, who made a very forward showing considering that it was his first start for some time.
llias was first out, but Florence Mills soon headed her, and was bowling along very, easily in front all the way to the straight, attended by Silver River, Great Hope, Racecall and llias. Though Silver River and Racecall challenged, they had no chance ' with the leader, who won easily. Silver River was half a length in front of Great Hope, who could not quite see it out, with llacccall a neck away fourth, and Vadanoe, llias and Ohanga next. Awapuni stables filled the first and second places in this event. LED ALL THE WAY. ] Taking charge early, Airing, who i claimed a 61b allowance, was never thereafter headed to win the Kiwitea Handicap by a neck from Onewhetu, who ran a very solid race, despite his weight and his absence from racing for a period. It was a good effort on the part of the Sandstar gelding. Airing led early from Onewhetu, Reipar,' Gay Boy, Lone Raider (who drew the rails) and Lady Kyra. The order was practically unchanged to the straight, but Dancing Lady made a run from the rear. Gay Boy ran another good race to be third two and a half lengths in front of Lady Kyra, with Lone Raider a neck away, and then Dancing Lady.
