Grand Jury is a likely starter on ond day, and although he ran thlld at Levin, ho is aged, and not too much can be expected of him. . .. Horses arriving to-day are as H. Telford (Trontham), with Deficit, Accomplice, and most likely Debham for e second day: R- Barlow (New Plymouth) with Clcssamor; W. Griffiths (Hastings), with Tiger Gain. Journot, and Limbohm; G. Bayliss (Stratford), with Taitm-u. H. Dulieu (Now Plymouth) arrived ear-, Her in tho week with Even Money and Cloak. Both these candidates are in good fettle, and Even Money was put over two fences this morning with W. Gvindlay up and jumped in good style. , , Of J Fryer’s Hawera team, Onowhetu, Ned Cuttle and Vadino, the first-named looking bright after a spell, but may need a race. Ned Cuttle is improving. Vadino can be expected to show up . after a race. During the absence of Fryer m Australia, this team has been training under his brother, E. Fryer _ , Naughty Marietta, trained by R. Brough, is -working in good style and better thing may be expected of her. . , W. C. Grindlay, the Hawera jockey who returned from Melbourne this month, will ride Lacan in tho maiden race to-morrow. He returned from Australia with Mr o. Boyle’s four-year-old mare Dainty hue. While in Australia ho was under on gage--1 ment to J. Fryer to ride Tout le Mondo and Soloist. Unfortunately, the former fell when in a wining position at the Mooneo Valley meeting and Grindlay was dragged for a furlong. The second time he rode Tout le Monde, at Williamstown, the horse pulled tip lame and had to be turned out. Soloist also went lame. TRACK IMPROVEMENTS. From the four furlongs post for a distance of 15 chains towards the finishing post, tho Feilding tmek has been regraded and rograssed. , . Only eight chains of tho old racing rail aro left, almost the whole distance round the course having been refenccd, with concrete posts and wooden rails since tho last meeting. , Racegoers will appreciate tho action ot tho Jockey Club in placing two seats under tho pine trees near the stewards stand. THE GARDENS. Freshly painted gates at the main entrance lead into a promenade with beds of brightly coloured flowers on cither side. Mr A. Branncy (caretaker) has succeeded in getting the flowers tot he zenith of their beauty for the race meeting. In all, 14 beds have been prepared to greet the eyes of patrons, and include pansieSj Iceland poppies, stocks, nemesia, antirrhinums and- dimorphethica, while in the background there is to be seen a splendid display of various coloured roses.
