EXTRACTS FROM ‘ ‘STANDARD. ’ ’ “ NOVEMBER 26, 1907. Owing to the prevalence of measles it had been found necessary to close the Fitzhcrbert East School. It had been complained that there was a great shortage of trucks on the Main Trunk line, and that in many cases the sidings were blocked with goods awaiting transport. Reports of the discovery of gold at Terrace End which were supposed to have been made some time previously, had at first led to local syndicates being formed; but after several months the matter had fallen flat. Major-General (now Lord) BadenPowell had expounded a scheme for the voluntary training of a million and three-quarters of boys who were,, he claimed drifting toward crime. ■ At a! meeting of the Palmerston North Beautifying Society, suggestions had been called for the proposed laying out of the Square reserves. As an instance of the high house rentals in Wellington, it was recorded that a six-roomed house cost 30b a week, a seven-roomed residence £2, and a house with ten rooms £3. There was very little if any ground attached; Tram , fares added considerably to the general cost.
