FAR EAST RELIEF FUND.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—The chairman of the Far East Relief Committee has issued the following statement on behalf of the joint council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society:—The work of organising this appeal ends on the 30th of this month, although as the result of organisation it is hoped that a considerable sum will he received after the official closing date. -This appeal is the first made by the (joint council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Fed Cross Society; a similar appeal is being made in other parts of the Empire. It is fully recognised that there are many worthy objects of our benevolence in our own country, but the appeal from the East is so overwhelmingly piteous that it appears irresistible. The joint council hopes to senU medical men, clothing, drugs, ant dressings to tlie East. Hie amonn that can be done depends on the practical sympathy of our people. There are few people in New Zealand who, if they feel deeply for the frightful suffering and helplessness of our fellow creatures in China, cannot give half-a-crowii as a sign and symbol or their benevolence.—l am, etc., C. MEACHEN, National Secretary. November 23, 1937.
