A SUGGESTION.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I think the time opportune to suggest that the discoverer, or at least the first white man to set foot on the soil, of the Manawatu should have a memorial erected in Palmerston North. Unfortunately.. Edward Jefningham Wakefield's memory is gradually slipping into oblivion. His grave is even neglected in Karori Cemetery. The Wakefields more than anyone else had the vision that New Zealand, would ono day become the pearl of the British Empire. If there is any profit derived from the Jubilee celebrations I would suggest that it be allocated toward some fitting memorial to this pioneer of our city and district. We would have the distinction of being the first community to recognise the worth bf this great English family.—l am, etc., ■- MANA.
