GOLD PRODUCTION

SLIGHT DROP RECORDED. REPORT TO PARLIAMENT. The value of the production of metalliferous mines, stone quarries and coalmines during 1936 was £3,768,181 compared with £3,741,978 for 1935, according to the annual Mines vStatement presented in the House of Representatives this week by the Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb). During the year 597,5480 z. of goldsilver bullion, valued at £1,272,587 was produced, a decrease in quantity of 56960 z., and in value of £27,459. as compared with the previous year. The gold content of the bullion was estimated at 164,5T50z., valued at £1,233,178. The Minister stated that the estimated gold production for tliß past seven years had been:—l93o, 120,-

“It will be noted that for the year under review there has been a slight drop in gold production,” Mr Webb said. “This is disappointing. Quartz mining showed an appreciable decrease mainly on account of the fact that the outputs of the Blackwater and Big River mines dropped by 21920 z and 19580 z respectively. On the other hand, the output of the Martha mine increased from 52,5410 z to 53,1080 z, while from the Wailii Grand Junction mine the recovery of gold amounted to 76200 z, compared with 58970 z for the previous year. “Alluvial mining, however, was re--o.td ui dorp jopjo.iS t> ,ioj o[qrsuods duction than quartz mining, the figures for 1936 being 33,6180 z, as compared with 37,1340 z for the previous year, a reduction of 35160 z. The reduced r'etprns of the King Solomon mine accounted for almost half of this reduction, while the balance was due to the large drop in the number of subsidised miners engaged on this class of work. No fewer than 1407 subsidised prospectors were transferred to other avocations.” Dredging activities produced 37,269 oz, an increase of 52070 z over the

previous year. The Dominion’s total production of crude petroleum oil to December 31, 1936, was estimated at 2,631,337 gallons.
