DISTRICT TRADES COUNCIL.

T!ie monthly meeting of the Manawatu District Trades Council was held in the Trades Hall, Palmerston North, on Wednesday, all affiliations being represented. The secretary reported that he had received advice that several further organisations had affiliated and were now entitled to representation on the council. The secretary also reported on attending meetings of two unions with a view of endeavouring to get them to obtain affiliation to the federation ; in both cases the object was achieved. The delegate to the National Council gave a lengthy report on the meeting of the council which was held recently in Wellington, explaining that a large and varied amount of business had been brought to a successful conclusion. The meeting unanimously passed a resolution “to give effect to a boycott of Japanese goods owing to Japan’s inhuman attacks on innocent civilians in China.” A deputation has been appointed to wait on the Employers’ Association in an endeavour to give effect to the boycott by asking shopkeepers to withdraw all Japanese goods for sale. All unions are being circularised asking them to make an appeal to shopkeepers and others handling Japanese goods to support the boycott, and also make a general appeal to the public to patronise only those shops which display signs that, they do not stock Japanese goods. A boycott committee has been set up and will be holding frequent meetings to report progress. A deputation is to approach Mr J. Hodgens, M.P.. with regard to the recent deputation to him by the restaurant and tea-room proprietors with regard to an alteration m the hours of work, the Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union delegate emphatically protesting against any alteration in the present hours, and stating that these girls should not be allowed to work any later than 10.30 p.m. The delegate pointed out that this law had been in force for 20 years, 18 of which were under a Conservative Government, and also that provision was made in the Restaurant and Tea Room Workers’ Union award for night waiters.
