IN JOHANNESBURG. —Less than fifty years ago a mere huddle of huts and shanties, Johannesburg is now a great and growing city, situated on what has been called "the richest site in the world." Above are seen: (1) The colossal mine dumps of the famous Rand gold reef seen from the air. (2) One of the principal streets of the quickly-changing city. (3) Dealers in the "Street," after the closing of the Stock Exchange. On days of excitement the business in gold mining shares—"Kaffirs"—has occasionally been so great that it could not be coped with. (4) Weighing bars of gold in the offices of a great mining company.
