HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting. of the Palmerston North High Schools’ Board and Technical School Committee was held last evening, Mr M. H. Oram presiding. _ Prior to tho commencement of business, the chairman referred to the death of Mrs A. J. Graham, who, he said, had taken a very keen interest in secondary education in the city. A motion, of sympathy with Mr Graham was carried. Tlie rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr J. Murray) reported that tlie roll number at tlie school was 361 and the average attendance 348. The annual road race had been won by A. B. Langley. The sports were to be held on November 17. The Parents’ Association had decided to expend £lO on books for the school library, and £lO had been donated to the prize fund. Mr Anderson had resumed duty on October 4 after being absent on account of illness. Tlie principal of the Girls’ High School (Miss E. E. Stephens) reported that the roll number was 244 and tho average attendance 230.9. Mr J. J. Stevenson, of the Boys’ High School, had examined the playing areas at the back of tlie Girls’ High School. He had • made certain recommendations with reference to the improvements desired. The work would involve an outlay of £lO. Miss Stephens said that she would like to record her appreciation of Mr Stevenson’s help and advice. The director of tlie Technical School, in liis report, said that the gross proceeds of Daffodil Day had amounted to £IOB 12s Id with net proceeds totalling £9B 0s 2d, which was a new record. He expressed thanks to all for their cooperation. During ten years the annual effort had realised £560 16s Bd. Miss E. E. Smyth and Miss P. Winter had donated cups for prepared speeches by first and second year pupils, while donations to the library had been received from Miss Myra Hickin and Mr N. Edgar. The Symth Cup had been won by Mies Winifred Murray, the Winter Cup by Eric Honey, and tho Molly Jones Cup (seniors) by Mary Ryrie. Thanks were due to Messrs T. O Watson, D. W. Low and M. H. Oram for acting as judges. Mesdames Aitchison and Dnlgleish were acting as judges of tlie dinner cooking competition. Owing to illness, Mr Newman had Loen absent from duty since October 18. The chairman, in his report, stated that donations towards the Girls’ High School Assembly Hall Fund were cominpr In freelv, the totals to dato bßing i —General fund, £827 6s 6d; Old Girls’ Association. £75 16s 6d; grand total, £903 3s. The Boys’ High School Parents’ Association had opened a fund for the establishment of an assembly hall at that school. Tlie board, .lie said, was indebted to the association for ’its live interest. Votes of appreciation were accorded all donors of trophies and cash, and all who lind assisted the schools in anv way. ... . The need for additional accommodation at the Technical School was again stressed, and the matter is to be brought to the notice of the department with increased emphasis. With reference to the matter of vocational guidance, the Director of Education advised that at present this work could only be confined to the four centres. “It is hardly fair,” commented Mr G. Tremaine, who. moved that tlie attention of tlie Minister lie drawn to the matter. This was decided upon. It was decided to lay down an additional asphalt tennis court at the Technical School and to extend tlie netting to provide another grass court. It! was reported by the chairman that Professor Shelley had consented to be the speaker at the combined breaking-up ceremony of tbe Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools.
