COMPULSORY TRAINING.
SYSTEM OF DEFENCE
WAR VETERANS’ RESOLUTION
AVELLINGTON, Sept. 3,
At a meeting of the South African War Veterans’ Association in Wellington yesterday the following resolution was passed, being moved by Colonel G. Mitchell, D. 5.0., and seconded by Mr J. I. Goldsmith: “While appreciating the further measures by which the Government proposes to take its part in the defence of this country and the Empire, we are of opinion any voluntary system of defence is unjust in principle and will never provide a sound and equitable defence scheme for the Dominion. •“We believe that the defence of the country' is the duty of every fit man in it. While pledging our wholehearted support to whatever system of defence is in force we respectfully suggest to the Government that a. universal compulsory system of training and defence is the only democratic and efficient means of defending the country. ... •
“We further suggest that in case of war all supplies, industries and services be mobilised —that no one be allowed to profit out of war.”
