DISAPPOINTING TO SUPPLIERS.

STATEMENT BY MR J. A. NASH

Mr J. A. Nash, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Union, when interviewed by the “Standard” to-day, said that the announcement made of an increase in the guaranteed pride from 12 9-16 d to 13jd for butter will be very disappointing to suppliers. “The cost of production on the farms increased so rapidly last season,” he said, “and added to this is. the increased factory costs catching the farmer both ways. These factors had led many to believe that the new price would not he less than'ls 2d, and what the dairy farmer and factory directors would like to know is whether there are going to be increased costs this season; if so, then the producer will he no better off. ‘“Taking the estimated cost of working the farm at over 3d per lb. of fat, it does not leave the farmer much tor himself when we consider that, quite apart from ordinary charges, he lias to contend with such things as faihue in root ana other crops, cows coming in late, deaths in the herd, etc., and these things all add to the working of the farm over the year. . “Continental butters are certainly keeping down the price of New land butter on the home market, All Nash continued, “and where they were formerly from 12s per cwt. or more below New Zealand, in some cases they are selling at the .same price as our butter. The position will have to be watched very closely this season, he concluded.
