HOCKEY
NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Bully.”) . No club games were played in the Manawatu on Saturday last, two senior men’s teams and the women’s team being engaged in representative matclies. The A team, which journeyed to Dannevirke, suffered defeat —a result which is very disappointing considering the improved standard of hockey in the Manawatu this year. The side were unfortunate in losing Ward, but that cannot bo offered as an excuse. Had the team shown more aggressiveness they would have won. The Dannevirlte side were better trained and on that score alone deserved to win. The B team were beaten territorially bu Bush, but when opportunity came tlieir way they grasped it with both hands and to this their victory was due.
To the women congratulations must be extended. This was their second representative game, and they put up a good performance to defeat Bush. Visit Of Indian Team.
With the co-operation of Australia a visit from Indian players will be arranged for 1938. It is not too soon for Manawatu players to get into serious training.
Broadway Juniors. In the Combined Services v. Broadway junior game recently the Combined Services forwards were passing nicely and making the most of their opportunities, and it was only the strenuous defensive work of J. Oliver, the Broadway captain, that kept the score down to 6—l. In sharp contrast was the lamentable showing of the Broadway forward line, who adopted hit-and-run tactics without any attempt at passing or dribbling. The Broadway team has shown little improvement this year, and some of the players got out of position far too much. Combination cannot be obtained unless every player can be depended on to be in his correct position when he is required. Olympic Games. Provided that finance can be obtained, Australia intends to send a hockey team to the Olympic Games in Tokio. With that end in view, the Australian Hockey Council has agreed to affiliate with the International Hockey Federation. Affiliation with the International Board of England will be terminated. Congratulations.
The congratulations of a wide circle of hockey enthusiasts are extended to D. O’Brien, the popular skipper of the Manawatu representatives, on the announcement of his engagement. Many players seem to retire from hockey (at least for a time) when they join the ranks of the Benedicts, but such is surely not likely in this case, for his fiancee is herself a keen sportswoman, vice-captain of the Te Ivawau basketball representatives, and a consistent supporter of the Broadway Hockey Club. Australian Tour.
To the time of writing, the record of the New Zealand representative team’s tour of Australia is: Played 19, won 15, lost 3, drawn 1; goals for 89, goals against 32.
