OBITUARY.

MR ANDREW W. MELLON. deceived August 27, 2.10 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 26. The death lias occurred >af Mr Andrew AY. Mellon.

Born in 1855, Mr Mellon received a university education and rose to the position of president of the Mellon National Bank, Pittsburg. He was also an officer or director of various financial . and industrial corporations and engaged in development of coal, coke, and iron enterprises. It was said of him that he controlled a group of corporations which have virtual monopolies of important articles of trade, including aluminium, and his fortune is thought is be the biggest in the world. In 1921 lie resigned from the Mellon Bank and was apixhmcd Secretary to the Treasury under President Harding. He retained that office under Coolidge and Hoover until February, 1932. when he was appointed Ambassador to Great Britain- He resigned that position in March, 1933, to take over full control of the Union Trust Company.
