HOCKEY

NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Bully.”). The Massey College senior team on Saturday did their beet to give Broadway A a taste of defeat, but without success; the yellow and blues continued on their winning way and it .would seem that they will go through the season unbeaten. The points tables now stand:

MEN’S SENIOR.

Congratulations. When congratulations are being extended to Broadway they should not be confined to the A team. The sporting spirit of the B team also deserves commendation. The players turn out Saturday after Saturday, and although they have been defeated on every occasion, they realise that, after all, the game’s the thing. The same remarks apply to the junior team who have only had two wins in eleven games but keep on smiling. Visit Of English Team. So far the invitation for an All-Eng-land hockey team (ladies) to tour New Zealand next year has not been accepted. At least, the acceptance has not yet reached New Zealand. Two good ambassadors for New Zealand, who are at present in England and will see to it that the team are not “tourists,” are Misses A. Yorston, treasurer of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association, and E. Beattie, for many years secretary of the Canterbury Association. These two know what we require here in the way of a touring team, and we can look forward to a team of England’s best. There is some talk of an Indian team (men’s) also touring New Zealand next year, and in a recent bulletin issued by the men’s association mention was made of the proposal that the two associations should combine and make one tour of it, in that matches in each centre should coincide. Big Scoring. A team can only play as well as it is allowed to and on Saturday Phoenix took advantage of the latitude given them in this respect to produce some excellent hockey. The majority of the seven goals were the result of excellent passing movements, Sutton’s three from the centre forward position being timed nicely. Broadway were at times unlucky and on several occasions were in the opposition circle. They could not, however, push the advantage home. A couple of hot shots just went wide. A Hint To Backs.

A good pair of backs gives a team a very safe feeling, and it is as a pair that they should work. They should understand each other, and know exactly what to do and where to go when a crisis is imminent. Two simple rules that can so easily be learned are these:—(a) Never play square (i.e., in a straight line with each other across the field), (b) Mark the opposing inside forward. Manawatu has some particularly good backs in the making and if they watch these two points it will pay them. A Good Feature.

A feature of the games on Saturday was the absence of talking and the good spirit between players. This is not always so ill local hockey, there being usually a great deal of energy spent on giving the other fellow advice. The umpires have taken a stern view of the practice and the improvement on Saturday was marked. Ladies’ Competition. The standard of play in the ladies’ competition has improved out of all knowledge and the association is to he commended for giving the ladies representative fixtures. The big game on Saturday was between High School Old Girls and Broadway and was produc-tive-of excellent hockey. Some of Broadway’s sa.ves were remarkable, the goalie, Miss C. Kempson, playing an outstanding game. Miss M. Kearns, who scored three of the H.S.O.G. goals, is a useful forward and very dangerous in the circle.
