OBITUARY.
MRS C. E. DEVORE.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 22. A former Mayoress of Auckland, Mrs Charlotte Elizabeth Devore, of St. Stephen’s Avenue, Parnell, died on the eve of her 85tli birthday. Her husband, Mr A. E. T. Devore, with the late Mr J. B. Russell, established the legal firm of Messrs Russell and Devore and until his death in 1916 '"'as oneo* Auckland’s leading solicitors. In 1882 he was elected to the City Council and held office unopposed as Mayor from 1886 to 1889. Mrs Devore retained many memories of tho older social life of Auckland and of numerous past Governors and Gov-ernors-General, including Sir George Grey. Sir Hercules Robinson, the Earl of Glasgow, the Earl of Onslow, Lord Ranfurly, Lord Plunket and Lord Islington. She possessed a remarkable collection of invitations to Royal and Vice-Regal functions, mementoes of distinguished people whom she had met and photographs and newspaper cuttings dating ‘from 1870 onward.
