HARD LABOUR SENTENCE.
OFFENCE BY MOTORIST. Per Press Association. TIMARU, July 22. Two months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and disqualification from obtaining a driver’s license for three years after the expiration of his present license, which itself was cancelled, was the sentence imposed to-day on Thomas Hunter Dowie for negligently driving a motor car at Maltikihi on May 14, thereby causing the death of Ivan Davies. f‘lf 1 followed my own inclinations I would accept the view that what has happened since the accident was a sufficient deterrent, but I have a duty to deter others,” stated Mr Justice Northcroft when passing sentence in the Supreme Court. “Prisoner was driving too fast, was on the wrong side of the road, a.nd was not keeping a proper look-out. He was driving with that wanton irresponsibility and recklessness of others on the road. Though it is unlikely to occur again in prisoner’s case, unhappily it will be done by others.” ■
