GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI. ’ACTIVITIES BY STEEPLECHASERS. (By “Spectator.”) Though tho course was in tip-top order, tho flags wero? 40ft. out, on the Awapuni course for training operations this morning, owing to the inside going being greasy, but the youngsters had the use ot 3ie rails. ' . . Going well, tho Nigger Minstrel colt Quadroon easily beat Dawning Light over four furlongs in 54scc. Old Surrey (Broughton), who looks very fit after his racing in Wellington, had tno measure of Wagner long before the post was reached in a half-mile covered in o sec. Old Surrey was striking Out vciy Forest Glow and Tangled, a trio of Seasoned steeplechasers, were given a solid work-out over two and a half miles, finishing practically together. Tbe pace was not on all the way, the trio being speeded up over the last mile. ' Alby, looking very well, hit out strongly in a gallop once round on the plough. Beaulack (Mansfield) ran three furlongs in 40scc. , , , ~ Tidewaiter (Tattcrsall) covered half a mile very nicely in 54soc. Screen Lord (Rae), Sudan (Ridgway) and the Pombal —Episode colt (Leach) were a trio- of- yougsters exercised on the courso next the rails. , Valroy (A. McDonald) worked on the plough, while Bluffer (Leach) and Jho Crooner (S. Anderson), who.will be brought back into condition for classic engagements, are being jogged about at present, and were allotted light exercise on tho No. £ grass track. Sporting Gift (McDowell) was sent over half a mile, boing Speeded up to cover the last two furlongs in 26soc. Pango, who was prevented from starting at tho Great Northern meeting owing to a leg injury suffered at Ellerslic, has made a reappearance, on the track, and was given light exercise to-day. . Catalogue (A. McDonald), showing plenty of dash, sprinted over fivo furlongs in 1.8. An Iliad—Morit colt from Mrs A. McDonald’s stable was a worker on the track noxt the rails. , Gay Boy has been out spelling since tho Manawatu winter meeting., owing to the naturo of the going, while liis former stablemate, Hunting Lodge, is at M. Grogan s stud for mating with Phalaris Bay. Mounts for S. Anderson at the Marton meeting include Kio, Unexpected and Joviality. The Awapuni horseman, C. Thomson, who rode Sandy Dix to victory in the Great Northern Hurdles, has boon engaged to ride Brigadore in tho Grand National Slceplechase and Red Sun in the Grand National Hurdles.
