QUESTIONS IN THE HOUSE

Questioned respecting the alleged statement of the officer cormti ending tile United States mine-sweeper Avoeet that the United States does not recognise Canton Island as a British possession, Mr R. A. Eden, in the House of Commons, said that the British Ambassador on July 10 had communicated to tile United States Government a oopv of an Order-in-Council of March 8 whereby Canton and other islands were incorporated in the Gilbert and Ellice fslands Colony. Mr Arthur Henderson (Labour): Are any steps being taken to avoid a recurrence of Hie unpleasant, incident?
Mr Eden said he would deprecate the suggestion that there had been an unpleasant incident. Mr Henderson: Has any reply been received from the United States? Mr Eden: T don’t think the communication requested a reply.
