PAHIATUA, July 14. Cr A. W. Bissct presided over the monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Council to-day, when the Labour Department advised that they arc prepared to I subsidise the wages of seven men to the extent of £4 per week for four months on new works under tho control of the council. The clerk stated that the men had been put on to the work in conionmty with the decision. It was mentioned that in Ruawhata, Alangannitu and Balia nee there were cowsheds on the road and in t.hc case of tho former the road was dangerous for traffic at times. A decision was made to inform tho owners that the nuisance must be stepped. It was resolved to donate 1000 trees to the R.S.A. Walton Park plantation for planting on Arbor Day. The Treasury advised the council in respect of the bridge loan of £4900, which the latter had experienced some difficulty in raising, that the State would lend tho required amount for a period of 15 years with half-yearly payments on a 20-year tabic. It was decided that in future a contractor must take out a public risk policy before tendering for contracts. Mr W. J. Henderson was in the chair at a meeting of the Bush Rugby Union executive yesterday. It was intimated that Mr P. Cassidy’s medal for the most improved representative player had been allocated to the juniors. It was decided to forward a letter to tho Ilorowhcnua Union thanking them f-or their gesture in. allowing the Bush juniors to hold the Gillespie Cup for the season, though the match had been drawn. Air Rcic.hcnbach mentioned that the Bcbington Shield had not been engraved since 1934 and the secretary wa<s instructed to have his done. It was decided to ask Wairarapa to play the return match against Bush on either July 24 or 31 and whichever date is available will be allocated for the senior Ccwan Cup game it was decided that the junior fixtures be played as originally drawn. The results of the Bush Basketball Association’s competition games, played at Pahiatua, are-.—Rovers 13 beat Swifts 6, Waratahs 11 drew with Athletic 11. A team of boys styled as Athletic beat the Rovers— 13—12 in a practice game. Juniors: High School 14 beat Athletic A 5, Papatawa 15 beat Athletic B 1, Woodvilla v. Ngawapurua. postponed. The secretary of the Bucsh Herd Testing Association (AJr J. C. Carbines) reported the following figures for the season 1936-37:—Woodviile group (1817 cows), 303 Jb fat in 256 days; highest herd (40 cows), 4191 b fat in 278 days; highest cow, 6211 b fat in 263 days. Eketahuna group (2273 cows), 2861 b fat in 250 days; highest herd (50 cows), 3901 b fat in 259 days; highest cow, 5611 b fat in 291 days. Pahiatua group (477 cows), 2831 b fat in 256 days; highest herd (59 cows), 3271 b fat in 273 days; highest cow, 5641 b fat in 298 days. The deputy Mayor (Air 8. K. ttidiiei.s;

presented a report on a visit to a conference of Wairarapa local bodies held at Alasterton which stated, inter alia: “The borough .has been authorised by the acting Minister of Public Works (lion. P. C. Webb) to employ two unemployed men permanently lor two months on a subsidy of £4 per week, the council to find the . excess. The following committee was elected when a meeting of delegates from the tabic tennis cluhfi in tho district met to form a Bush Association: Miss F. Buckingham, Aloes re I. Coleman, N. Petlcrson, E. Al. Wright. C. 11. Mills, C. McXabb. F. Goggin and N. Cooper. A president and vice-presidents were elected, with Mr E. M. Wright as chairman and Mr r Coleman secretary. It was resolved to affiliate with the Wairarapa Association for the first season as a sub-association.
