HONOUR FOR PALMERSTON lAN

The pleasing advice has been received by Mr and Mrs J. McMahon, of Linton, that their son, Mr P. R. McMahon, who has been engaged in extensive wool research work at the Leeds University, has been granted his Ph.D. degree. . . iJr. McMahon lias enjoyed a distinguished academic career. He received his primary education at the Convent School, and from 1926 till 1929 was at the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, from which he obtained an agricultural bursary in 1929. After a year at Victoria University College lie was a student at Massey Agricultural College from 1931 to 1933. graduating B.Agr.Sc. in 1932 and M.Agr.Sc. in 1933. He specialised during the latter part of bis course on wool research, with special reference to the prevalence of hairiness in wool and the use of the benzol test, on which his thesis was written, and for which he evolved an improved testing instrument incorporating the use of the photo-electric cell for recording purposes. In August. 1935, after winning the Macmillan Brown scholarship. Dr. McMahon went to the Leeds University, from which he has been granted his doctorate as a result of extended research into his specialised branch of the study of wool-fibres. The date of his return to New Zealand is not yet definite.
