OBITUARY

MRS AY. R. MAYES. The death occurred with painful suddenness, this week, of Mrs W. 11. Mayes, of Lombard Street, who was well-known in the city and by her cheerfully rendered Christian service over a period of 20 years won the esteem of the community. The deceased lady was born in Invercargill in 1882 and was educated there. Her father was Mr Charles Clutch, inspector of permanent ways, who was transferred to Wanganui when Mrs Mayes was 17. She was married in 1901 and lived in Wanganui for 13 years, eventually coming reside in Palmerston North in 1916. Mrs Mayes was always public spirited and she took an active interest in many movements for good. An enthusiastic member of the Church of Christ, she had been president of the Christian Women’s Auxiliary until ill-health compelled her to resign year. She took an active interest in the affairs of the Orange Lodge and was a Past Mistress of the L.L.0.L., No. 34, having passed through the chair on no fewer than three occasions. Airs Mayes was always a keen croquet player and took an active part in the control of the game. She was a member ol the Northern club and had been secretary and vice-president at various times, while as a member of the Manawatu Croquet Association she gave yoeman. servee to the game. She leaves a husband and family of four to mourn their loss —Mrs G. E. Thorburn, Mrs C. L. Omundsen, Mrs T. Holden and Mr David Mayes, all of Palmerston North. There .are also two sisters and three brothers —Mrs G. Mayes (Wanganui), Mrs F. G. Anstis (Stratford), Messrs Charles Crutch (Hawera). Clifford Crutch (Christchurch) and A. Crutch (Sydney). The funeral, which took place yesterday, was largely attended and the many wreaths were striking testimony to the respect felt for the deceased l.ady. Pastor Tyrell Baxter conducted the service at the church and the graveside, while the Orange Lodge service was conducted by P.G.M. Bro. Smithers. of Feilding. Officers of the church were pall-benrers at the church, and Orange Lodge brethren at the cemetery.
