MONTHLY MEETINGS
LYTTON STREET SCHOOL
The monthly meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee was held last evening. Those present were Messrs 0. V. Jewell (chairman), C. V. Guy, L. Jenkins, G. Wilkinson, Mesdames Scott and Donaldson and tile headmaster (Mr W. H. Smith).
The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Wilkinson, a new member. A letter was received from the New Zealand Educational Institute (Manawatu branch), inviting three members to attend a lecture by Dr. J. S. Kandel. It was decided to accept the invitation.
A letter was received from the Wanganui Education Board advising ' that it had been decided to amalgamate the Makino School with Lytton Street School, and that tenders were being called for the transport of pupils. Accounts amounting to £8 were passed for payment. , The headmaster made the following report: —The roll has increased from 293 to 304. The attendance has been very satisfactory, although adversely affected at times by bad weather conditions. Much improvement in the playing areas has been effected by the grazing of sheep during the holidays and this has enabled us to do a certain amount of rolling and mowing. The football ground is very wet and really needs regrading A drain lias been dug at the north end to take away some of the surface water. It has been found necessary to dismantle the rockery. 1 This will -be- rebuilt and replanted. A short ceremony was held on Coronation Day, when the children were addressed by the headmaster and Mr J. S. Tingey. A scarlet oak was planted by Betty Allen (the youngest pupil). During the absence of Miss J. Crabb (infant mistress), Miss E. Carson is acting as mistress of the infant department. Damage to the walls and fireplace, caused by a fire, lias been remedied by the department’s workmen. The' loss in equipment, etc., was estimated at £2l and was covered by insurance. An electric bell lias been installed, but has proved unsatisfactory, and another type ot_ bell is to he installed on trial. "Winter games are now fully organised, and over forty girls and eighty boys are participating in school games on Inday afternoons. The girls are competing in the inter-school basketball competitions, lor which two teams have been entered, and the boys have already played friendly games with the Convent School and the 1' ending Agrieulturald High School. One football team has been entered tor the seven-a-side tourney to he held in I alnierston North. The sum of -63 10s 4id luis been donated by the school to the King George V Memorial Fund. Consolidation: i\o further word lias been received concerning the transport of the Awahuri School chiklieii to Lytton Street School, but tenders have also been called for the transport of the Makino School pupils to tins school. The total number concerned from both schools is .51, and this will necessitate the services of an additional assistant on the staff.”
MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL The committee of the Manchester Street School also met last night, there being present- Mr G. J. lutzpatrick (chairman), Mrs R. G. Guy and Messrs Jas. Campbell (secretary), L. J. Carmine and Z. McLeod. A. letter from the Manawatu branen of the Teachers’ Institute invited three members of the committee to attend a lecture on education by an expert at Palmerston North.—The invitation was accepted. The headmaster reported that the
roll stood ut 384 -with an average of 3521. Miss M. Fenkert, additional teacher, had begun her duties on May 24. The quadrangle was being prepared for the cinema show. The badminton club was functioning and the teachers appreciated the committee’s kindness in giving permission for this. The sum of £27 had been expended on the school library, and further purchases would be made later in the year. The ’ committee authorised the supplying of iiot cocoa for those children taking their lunches to school. The chairman reported that he had attended a meeting of the committee appointed to consider the supply of milk for the children. The 1 position at present was that no vendors were prepared to undertake the supply, mid it was proposed to ask the authorities to establish a model dairy farm at the Agricultural High School for the purpose. Referring to tile Coronation celebrations, the chairman thought not enough had been done to fix this event in the minds of the children and lie suggested a. card should he printed and a copy presented to each pupil. 4ho committee postponed consideration of this. , . , , It was decided to have the concrete parapet fronting the school painted The school bull is to be held at the end of July, aiidarrangements were put in hand.
