\ . MANAWATU BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board was held yesterday, Mr P. G. Mildon presiding. Also present were Messrs J. Collis, F. J. Bussell, D. Prouse, W. E. Thomas, H. It. Green and It. Tanner. Advice was received from the assistant engineer of the Public Works Department that the department was unable, after further consideration of the matter, to subsidise by £SO tile construction of Moore’s floodgate, ,in view of the board’s decision' “not to carry out the work in accordance with the specification and plan prepared.” “That ends the chapter so far as that is concerned,” commented the chairman. . Mr Tanner said the concrete was absolutely strong enough for the job in question, but it would be useless to persevere in the effort to secure the subsidy. Airs B. A. Bond, Bangiotu, wrote complaining that portion of her farm had been more or less under water for several weeks as a result of the drain passing through her property at Lockwood requiring cleaning. Four acres of new grass and about five acres of old pasture had been lost, and the writer sought attention to the drqin.— It was decided to clean the drain during the week, Air H. Voss, Karere, drew attention to the fact that fallen trees were obstructing the outlet of the drain from the Fell-Alatheson lagoon to No. 1 Line. The trees had been m this position for some time. —It was decided to take stepcs to have the obstruction removed. Air T. At. N. Rodgers (solicitor), for Atessrs Alve Bros, and E. 0. Alye, wrote stating that his clients had instructed him to ask that the board clean the drain from Alve’s corner to the Alain Drain on the north-east side of the main road.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the Ivairanga County Council. The overseer (Air At. AVilson) reported as follows on the month’s operations: Burke’s drain.—Very little work was carried out in this area during the early part of the month on account of the unsettled weather, but during the last fortnight good progress lias been made. The cleaning of Burke s drain has also been held up, but after several attempts has been completed. Approximately 37 chains of Taonui Stream have also been cleaned to give relief to Farmer’s Creek. Carmody s drain: Work is being carried out in an endeavour to bring all this work to a higher level. When work could not bo carried out to these two drains relief was given to No. 4 Line, No. 1 Line, and No. 1 Aorangi Drams. Contract work, like other work, was tern porarily held up, but it is being pushed on with at the present time, good progress being made.' —Adopted Air Collis stated that a very good job had been made in cleaning Burke’s lira in, from which a number of slips had been removed. The clerk (Air N. I. Nielsen) reported a debit balance of £823 2s 8d as Compared with £435 13s id at Alay 3. Drainage maintenance had accounted for £3(M 18s 7d. Included in the lodgments was £261 6s as refund of wages paid out under the No. o Scheme. Accounts amounting to hitl 16s 6d were passed for payment. It was decided that the following General rates be levied for the ensuing fear— Class A, one and 30-1000ths of a penny hi the £; Class B. 18-1000ths of 1 a penny; Class C, 412-1000ths of • a penny. .
