FOODSTUFFS FOR RABAUL.
FRICTION OVER ADMINISTRATION
RABAUL, June 4. The situation between the Administration ana loca, firms is growing rather tense owing to the taking over of foodstuffs by the former. The firms do not approve of returning to Rabaul and are making extensive arrangements to remain at Kokopo. They are fearful of a repetition of the outbreak, which seemingly is unwarranted. The local paper to-day issued a. special evacuation number and urges delay before finality is reached. VOLCANOES QUIET. Received June G, 11.45 a.m. SYDNEY, June 5. • A Rabaul message says that Vulcan and Matupi volcanoes are now quiet. Only a wisp of smoke is ascending from the craters. . DOMINION SYMPATHY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 5. The sympathy of the New Zealand Government and of the people of the Dominion with the sufferers in the liabaut eruption has been conveyed to the Australian Government by tbe Act-ing-Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser). Mr Eraser has now received a reply from the Acting-Prime Minister of Australia (Dr. Earl Page) expressing appreciation of his message.
