RULES OF TOURNEY. The British amateur golf championship is open to amateurs of any recognised golf club who are in receipt of a national handicap of three or less. The Royal Liverpool Club held an informal open amateur championship in 1855 and it was such a success that the Royal and Ancient Club decided to institute the amateur golf championship. The first event was played at St. Andrew’s the following year. The championship is decided by match play throughout and each match is played over 18 holes, except the final, which is over 36 holes. The Royal St. George’s course, Sandwich, where this year’s event' is being played, measures 6776 yards and the scratch score is 76. The course records are: Amateur, E. Martin Smith and Douglas Grant, 68; professional, T. H. Cotton, 65. The last time the championship was played at Royal St. George’s was in 1929, the winner on that occasion being C. J. Tolley, who was mentioned as being one of the favourites this year but lias now been eliminated. The present holder of the title, Hector Thomson, is not taking part as it was reported that the strain of tournament play was affecting his health.
