IN SINGLES AND DOUBLES. QUIST DOES NOT PLAY. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.-—Copyright. ) Received May 31, 9.45 a.m. FOREST HILLS, May 30. The Americans beat the Australians in the two first singles and the doubles in the American zone match in the Davis Cup competition. In the singles, B. M. Grant (U.S.A.) beat I. Bromwich (Australia), 6—2, 7 —5, 6 —l, and J. • D. Budge (U.S.A.) beat J. H. Crawford (Australia), 6—l, 6 —3, 6 —2. In the doubles match C. G. Mako and J. I>. Budge (U.S.A.) beat J. H. Crawford and V. B. McGrath, 7 —5, o—l,0 —1, B—6.8 —6. SINGLES MATCHES. Bromwich apparently was nervous in his first iiiierimtioiml Test game, and against Grant he opened extremely bacily. He won only five points in the first four games, going to deuce in the fifth, which was the first in which lie showed any resistance. Then he showed a'spurt of unexpected brilliance, winning Grant’s service and his own service, but quickly succumbed in the next, when the American ran out to take the set with a love game. Bromwich steadied nicely at the opening of the second set, assuming a 2 —o lead, but he won only one point in the next three games. . His doublehand shots lacked distance. He threatened Grant’s service in the sixth game, but the American pulled out and led 4—2. Bromwich recovered in tlie seventh game with excellentlytimed placements which caught the American flat-footed in mid-court. Grant, however, forged steadily ahead to 5 —3, his extraordinary court coverage enabling him to return almost everything. Bromwich with all h.s shots working splendidly evened the score at 5—5. However, Grant took the next two games to love. Bromwich lost the first four games of the last set, scoring only four points. He won the fifth, but the American was not to be denied, and took the set and match. The crowd. cheered the Australian for his gallant fight. BUDGE v. CRAWFORD. Budge, breaking through Crawford’s service in the third game of the first set, took a 2—l lead, which improved to 3—l with a love game. The American’s pace now became last and seemed likely to blast Crawford’s racquet from his hand. His services were like cannon shots, which the : Australian s racquet spun everywhere. Budge took three games in succession to win the set 6—l. . , Crawford rallied encouragingly in the second set and led 2—l, but he dropped Ilia own service in the next game and the American pulled up to a a—2 lead. Budge won tue firth game chiefly on Crawford’s errors. The Australian evened the score, retrieving his service in the sixth. He temporarily was on a par with his Opponent, whose runaway seemed to have been stopped, but Budge won the next three games to take the set. TEMPORARY RALLY.
Crawford again temporarily rallied in the third set. He was within a point of breaking Budge’s service to lead 2—o, but his judgment of distance again went awry. He dropped the next seven, points, lost his own service and gave the American a lead ot l 1Budge then went into a lead ot o i and then 4—2. Crawford produced a temporary stubborn resistance, str.vine desperately to retrieve Ins own service, which the American however, finally broke with finely-angled placements and was within a game of victory He was match point three times before he could clinch the match. Crawford fought to the bitter end, but it was not the old Crawford.
