LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES.

Business was only moderately active in the stock and share markets last week. The Wellington Stock Exchange showed a turnover of £33,000 worth, including some 15,000 shares. The principal features of the markets were the firmness of Government stocks and activo trading of New Zealand Breweries and Staples shares at higher rates. Colonial Sugar and Australian Glass showed some appreciation over the week, but the course of other leading issues was irregular. There whs a keen demand for Government loans, but supplies woro well held and business was restricted. Most issues advanced in price, notably the longerdated 4 per cent, issues. The 4 per cent, bonds 15-6-52-55 touched £lO4 17s fid, at which price tho yield, including redemption, is under 3J per cent. Local body and company debentures were very quiet and few dealings were recorded. Bank shares wore sluggish and in some casos slightly weaker. New Zealand sold to 455, but eased later to 44s 6d; tho I> long-term mortgage issue sold threepence bettor at 26s 9d. National of N.Z. were done at 655. Commercial of Australia were on tho easy side, business being done at from 19s 2d to 18s lldV Union sold at £ll 2s fid, and Australasia at £l2 15s. E.S. and A. had a sale at £6 Bs, and National of Australasia (£5 paid) wero done at £7 10s to £7 Bs, Insurance shares were quiet, National selling at 17s, New Zealand at 62s 3d to 62s 6d, and South British at 94s 3d to ' 94s 6d. There was very little doing in pastoral anu financial issues. Wright, Stephenson preference sold firmly at 21s, and Goldsbrough Mort at 38s 2d, and 37s lid. Breweries wore generally active. Now Zealand shares, on the strength of tho increasing final dividend and tho option to purchase certain assets of Staples and Co., advanced on brisk trading from 63e fid to 66s 9d> later business being done at down to ot* fid. Stanles moved up from 51s to 535, latcr casing to 52s fid. Dominion were also a firming market, sales ranging from 42s 9cl to 44s 6d and for tho now iseuo from 41s 3d to 43s 3d. Dunedin sold at 29s 3d to 29s 6d, Tui at 575, and Tooths at 55s 8d to 56s 3d and back to 55s 9d. I'luctuttticns in tho metals market produced reactions m Broken Hill Proprietary and other metal companies. The former moved up to 85s fid, hut fell away at the week-end to bis sd. Broken Hill South tare actively traded at from 50s 3d to 52s 3d, but cased later to 50s 6d. Electrolytic Zinc, .Mount Lycll and Mount Morgan wore similarly irregular.
