It is now disclosed that a Jew, Helmut Ilirseh, aged 21, was sentenced to death on 31 arch 8 for high treason lor bringing explosives into Germany. litis an American citizen. The sentence was not announced until March 20, which some quarters regarded as supporting a rumour that Hirscli was connected with a plot against Herr Hitler, although it is reported that Hirscli only conlessed he planned to assassinate a high official. The American Consul visited Hirscli, whom he found doubtful about the success of his appeal lor the commutation of the death penalty. He asked the Consul to tell his parents in Czechoslovakia that be was calmly awaiting the end. The American Government is now supporting the plea for clemency.
