AMERICAN AIR FORCE

STRENGTH TO BE TESTED. WASHINGTON, April 10. The Department of War has ordered the concentration of 244 army combat aeroplanes in California during the month of May to test the strength of the organisation. The personnel will include 450 officers and 2500 of other ranks. The total of 244 machines represents the actual fighting strength. There are 1500 serviceable ’planes, but these include several hundred obsolescent types, training ’planes and 100 assigned to the reserve and not used by the regular am force units. Military experts are upset by the reports from Europe, and decline to state whether the United States is fifth or sixth among the world Powers.
