SPORTING

TROTTING AT AWAPUNI. MANAWATU MEETING. THE PRINCIPAL EVENTS. (By “Abaydos.”) With an average of over 20 horses per race, tho Manawatu Trotting Club has every reason to feel proud of tho solid support accorded its meeting by owners and trainers, which gives further proof of the popularity of the club. In the Manawatu Trotting Cpp and President’s Handicap, tho two principal events, the fields are not only largo, but represent good class. The contestants aro well forward, with a lot of racing and the issue in each case is very open. Some of the Cup horses are racing at Thames, and if any prove successful they will enter further into calculations. Handicappcr has won at Auckland and Ilawera, and Mountain Flight, after a win at Epsom, was four times placed on the circuit. Compass was second at his last start to Kenwortliy, who raced well at Wanganui, Hawera and New Plymouth. Guid Ilairst was beaten by Kewpie’s King at her last start but is regaining form. Red Frontier is a possibility and Imposter is likely to go very well. Nawton Parrish is a fine young improvor, but tho pick of the northern contingent is Our Peggy, who lias been undefeated in her lust three starts.

Ideal in Form. The southern pacers Reno and Doris Derby will give added attraction to a fine race, while from Ilutt Park comes Ideal, whoso second to Red Flush at Nelson was a great effort. The fact that Red Flush has won four on end since makes Ideal’s prospects appear bright. Baron Grand is an improving young horse who is capable of putting up a great fight, whilo Tori Ivingi, on his day, would keep all hands busy. Silver Black and Activity aro smart hut not real stayers, but the trotters Wall and Franz Derby will see the journey out. The latter is in great form. Of those behind tho limit. Levity is speedy but too erratic, and Bonnie Direct has not struck form. Full Hand raced very consistently at Wanganui, and N.\ tivc Cole is improving at every meeting and may provide another surprise. Silk Cord is in winning vein, but lias not yet shown any indication of being a stayer. Glorietta was second in tho two miles races at Wanganui and New Plymouth, and is in splendid racing condition The acceptances and later track essays will throw further light on tho prospects, but at this early stage some to he favoured may include Our Peggy, Doris Derby, Ideal, Reno, Native Cole and Glorietta.

Great Sprint Field Silver Black is a speedy sprinter who ma.y go well, and tho journey will suit Activity. Red Frontier and Nawton Parrish have won at the distance, and Roadster showed a return to his best at Taranaki. Guid Ilairst will take a lot of beating, while if reserved Our Peggy would ho the main fancy. Doris Derby and Ideal aro good prospects, but at the journey Electric Bell reads as well as any. Decoy Bird is smart and at Hawera put up two fine efforts from a hack mark. Reno sprints well, while her companion, Savoldi,. won a double at Hawera in great style and is improving all the time. Ilandicappcr and Mount Flight will give additional interest to a great contest. Imposter lias a lino turn of speed, while Tori Kingi only requires to go away correctly to ho handy. Storm Queen, is a successful sprinter, who should put up a solid effort.

Native Cole’s Success Native Cole lias won three times over short courses in the last three months, and on each occasion put up splendid time. Silk Cord is a sprinter of high calibre, wiio has twice won on the local course, and won the final heat at New Plymouth. Glorietta. had a runaway victory over ter, furlongs at Wanganui, and was second at tho Taranaki meeting to Silk Cord. She is a fine pacer, who would do a good deal better, if she could begin a little quicker. Racing at. the Thames meeting will give a lino on the prospects of several of the Auckland candidates, while tho chances of others may be governed by their showing in the Manawatu Cup. There may he some alterations after the acceptances make their appearance, but on the present position some in demand may include Our Peggy, Guid ilairst, Electric Bell, Savoldi, Native Cole, and Silk Cord. Acceptances for all events close on Tuesday next, at 8 p.ni., with tho secretary, Mr A. 11. Munson, Box 412, Palmerston North.
