DEBATING SOCIETY
ELECTION OF OFFICERS. IAIPROAIPTU SPJSECHES. Tlie annual meeting of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society was held last evening, when Air W. B. Tennent presided over a largo number of members and prospective members. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, the latter showing the club to be in a sound financial position. Air Tennent, in moving tlie adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said tlie meeting was the largest he had seen for sonic time, and it was regrettable that it had, so far, been found impossible to widen the field of debate.
The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows-Patron, Air A. E. Mnusford; president, Air Tennent; vice-presidents, Alessrs J. A. Nash,' It. H. Billons and J. Hodgens, AI.P. ; secretary and treasurer, Air E. C. Watson; chairman of committee, Ah- T. C. Watson; committee, Airs E. L. Christian, Air J. S. Hornblow, All's J. Edwards, All- H. G. Alills, Air L. l’arlane; auditor, Air L. 1. Plimmer. A number of new members were elected.
It was resolved to rename the medal for debating, which was presented by Airs S. AI. Carlton and which In.s hitherto been known as tlie Piccadilly Medal. It will now lie known as the Airs S. AT. Carlton medal. It was resolved to extend ilie radius of debate for tlie Times Cup to 50 miles. Letters were received from several town clerks intimating their desire to foster the debating movement. Alessrs T. C. Watson and Tennent intimated their desire to present tiopliics for competition. It was resolved to leave the matter of the readjustment of the subscription in the hands of the committee. Aliss AI. Alurray donated a handsome cup for weekly competition in the impromptu section, the cup to be rctainc 1 at the end of the year by the member winning the final. A vote of thanks was accorded the donor. After the meeting a number of impromptu speeches were heard.
