Bell, 3 and 2. Bell is the youngest player ever to win the title, having yet to attain the age of seventeen years. His performance was unique, as it was the first time he had participated in an open tournament of any kind apart from the schoolboys’ championship, which he has won ior the past two years. Golf as a Fourteenth Century game is thought to he commemorated in a window of Gloucester Cathedral. The following description appears in the Diocesan Dlagazine “One of the lower lights of the great east window of Gloucester Cathedral depicts the figure of a man playing what is apparently golf. “This window, the largest church window in England, was erected by Sir Thomas Lord Bradstone, between the years 1340-1350 in memory of his companions in arms who fell at the battle of Crecy and the Siege of Calais, and it is thought by some that the figure thus depicted commemorates one who was a mediaeval devotee of the game.”
