FALSE CONFESSION.
VICTIM OF SOVIET POLICE. Methods used by Russian secret police to extract “confessions” from persons in custody are revealed by one of their recent victims. He is Arthur Tilo, a British-born German Jew, who was turned out of Russia with a batch of Germans accused of plotting against the Soviet State. Tilo is at present >n Poland, awaiting the result of his application for a British passport. He says that he was repeatedly “grilled” by the O.G.P.U. for four months while under arrest, being promised his freedom if he would confess to having spied for Germany and for the Trotskyists. While being well fed and never illtreated, Tilo says he was continually pressed for a confession, and told that it was the only way he would ever see his wife and child again. As a result of continuous pressure. Tilo finally confessed. but recanted when he found that he was not to be freed.
