A.J.C. RACES.
GOLD ROD’S SUCCESS IN LEGER. DONCASTER TO SARCDERTE. SYDNEY, March 28. The autumn meeting of the A.J.C. opencd at Rnndwiek on Saturday in ideal weather. The course was in splendid order, and the attendance 52,000. A notable feature of the meeting was the absence of the usual large important contingent of New Zealand horses, and in point of quality and numbers die present representatives of tho Dominion are tho poorest for many years. It was formerly the rule rather than the exception for New Zealanders to figure prominently in important events at Randwick at the spring and autumn meetings. The veteran Lough Neagh fought stubbornly, but was compelled to strike his colours to Allunga in the final, strides of the Autumn Plate, which ho won by half a neck.
The Melbourne colt Ajax made the opposition appear cheap in 'the Sires’ Produce Stakes, dashing to the front at harrier rise and nor afterwards being troubled. Ho passed the judge with a live' lengths’ advantage, equalling ihc Australian and New Zealand record. Not to be outdone, Sarcherio also equalled the mile Australian ami New Zealand record (held by Peter Pan) in the Doncas-
tor Handicap. The winner finished (ho race with rare clash from fifth position at the home turn.
Gold Rod dispelled doubts about his ability to stay by winning the St. Leger with case. The colt ran kindly under restraint. Ho occupied fourth position until entering the straight, and when McCartcn asked for an effort Gold Rod bounded forward and quickly settled the issue. Results.— FIRST HURDLE, of £SOO.
