FEILDING MEETING.

ALBY’S SURPRISE IN CUP. BEN BRAGGIE WINS SPRINT. INTERNATIONAL SUCCESSFUL. (By “Moturoa ”) The Feilding Jockey Club was wonderfully fortunate for the opening day of its Easter meeting on Saturday. Despite threatening conditions all around the district and rain that fell early in the morning, the afternoon broke fine, the warm sunshine being tempered by a gentle breeze which all combined to make conditions for racing ideai. The crowd was a huge one, by far the largest seen on the course for many years, and a notable feature was the remarkably large attendance of racegoers from Taranaki and even further north. There was unusual congestion around the totalizator, although arrangements had been made to cope with the extra business anticipated and the machine was running a trifle late all day. Even J then a considerable amount oi money | was shut out on every race. The total- ■ isator turnover was £27,2-50 10s compared with £20,207 10s last year, an increase of £7040. As the result of an inquiry instituted by the acting-stipendiary steward, Mr, Lisle Alderton (Auckland), T. Lorigan was suspended for a month for alleged careless riding of Taitoru in the Feild-, ing Cup, in which he was said to have interfered with Royal Secret, and later with The Buzzer. War Lap was stated to have interfered'with Happy Hunting in the Onepubi Hack Handicap and, on the grounds of crossing, the Awapuni apprentice G. R. Tattersall | was suspended for the remainder of j the meeting. The course, though a trifle dead, was in excellent order for racing and was J drying throughout the afternoon. Some, very fast times tor the course were recorded, Alby’s 2.0 for the Cup being smart.

SPLENDID CUP FIELD. It is not lor many years that such a fine field has paraded lor the Feililing Clip as the thirteen who walked out from the saddling paddock, the only defections being Lowenborg and Hound Score. Dungarvan, saddled with his big impost of U.B, looked a picture of health as he swept down past the stands, blit Spiral and One AVlietu, who followed, did not do their preliminaries at all well, One Whetu being decidedly scratchy. The Buzzer went down well and so did Royal Secret, while Lapel and Alby both looked well forward for the iray. Wagering was keen in this race and when the machine closed One Whetu (£(18(5 10s) The Buzzer (£O-14), Taitoru (£584 10s) and Dungarvan (,£502 10o) were all in strong demand, with tiie ultimate winner Alby (£lsi 10s) at a long doublefigure price. One Whetu, Lapel and Davistoek were slow away and Maestro temporarily took charge passing the stands lrom Taitoru, Koyal Secret, The Buzzer and Charade. 1 lie last-named then ran through last on the fence to lead out ot the straight, but the boy on Taitoru quickly challenged the new pacemaker and went into a clear lead uown ttie back lrom Maestro, who was just clear ol The Buzzer, Charade, Grand Jury and Royal Secret, while Alby and Dungarvan were improving their positions at tins stage, with One Whetu still in the last bunch with Aussie lfa and Davistoek. Alby secured a nice run on the home turn to go tip to Taitoru, but The Buzzer, Grand Jury and Dungarvan were all handy at this stage, ’taitoru was floundering under pressure before they aclually straightened up and that is where the AwapunL apprentice G. R. Tattersall summed up the position in a flash, darting away to a clear lead m a few | strides, and leaving the more favoured | division to negotiate Taitoru as best they could. The Buzzer was blocked and Dungarvan, fairly wide out, was the first to make a showing, lie was weakening at the distance, however, and The Buzzer at last got clear to come through with a great run. At the half-distance One Whetu, who was making his run from last at the two furlongs, loomed up on the fence and in a thrilling finish Alby hung on to win l>y a short lualNleiigth from lhc Buzzer, who was a nose in front of One Whetu, who must have won in another twenty yards. They were several lengths clear ot the bunch headed by Taitoru and Dungarvan, on terms, .Spiral, Royal Secret, Davistoek and Aussie Ra. Lapel, Maestro and Charade whipped in the field, j Details of races decided after the first edition of the “Standard” . went to press ou Saturday are as follow : TOP HAT’S PERFORMANCE. Having his first race, the big Tractor geldhig Top Hat scored an impressive win in the Maiden Stakes, in which he was always prominent. lie galloped greenly at the finish, hut showed too much class for the ojiposition. Yet another second was credited to Racecall, who made all the running into the straight for Top Hat, Aurora’s Love, Malibu and Olianga. The last-named missed the jump-out, but finished well in the straight, failing by the narrowest of margins °to get up for second money.. Aurora’s Love 'was 11 g°°d fourth. Ohanga should improved by the race. The race was spoilt by a straggling start. BEN BRAGGIE WINS. The Mangaone Handicap was an easy proposition for th'c odds-on favourite, Ber, Braggie who followed Land fax into the

, straight and came through to win pulling up. There was a good bat tle for second place, Severe, who. was second, running on to hold off Karl and Lady Ina, who finished fast from last. * GLIRA’S SMART PERFORMANCE. Under her steadier of 9.9 Geiru recorded a smart performance to win the Taonui Nursery. 1,. G. Morris jumped her out ■ smartly to shako Laughing Chief oil in the • first furlong. Mom that stage he let the half-sister to Werohia howl along at her own pace and .site won very comfortably. I The Bulls filly Aureus, who looks much T more solid than she did in the spring, ran | up to her earlier promise and there was -1 a great deal of merit in her second, for | she heat the others as easily as Geira beat her. Gaily, who races consistently, finisliI cd well on the fence to beat Gay Molly for third money. Scarf Dance and Laughing Chief were always prominent, but hid 1 not, threaten danger over the concluding I stages, but, Gay .Marionette was noticed finishing strongly. The well-hacked Notice was always at the tail of the field. SANHEDRIN BEA TS CATALOGUE. I Sanhedrin, who failed narrowly io beat j Rcipar at Stratford last week, made ; amends by defeating the favourite C'ata- ! jogue in the Onepuhi Hack Handicap, but I lie was possibly lucky to secure a better passage than the topweight, who was forced to cover a fair amount oi extra ground. War Lap and Happy Hunting took turns in paccnniking, War Lap leading into the i straight, where he collapsed as soon as Sanhedrin and Catalogue challenged. 'The dividcnd-paycr.s had matters all their own way in the last furlong and Happy Hunting came again to take third money irom Vonia Park. GOOD FINISH IN HALCOMBE. International’s superior stamina enabled him to uear down the favourite Airing in j the Halcombe Handicap to win narrowly, land the Captain Biinshy coil scored so attractively that, his connection,s must be regretting missing the St. Leger now that .Martara iias been withdrawn. Internalionial was one of tlie best-mannered horses at. i the barrier, and favoured by a smart jump out. was always handy. The success of Sanhedrin in the previous race influenced the public largely in making Airing tile favourite. ’1 hey were a trifle unlucky, for Airing was badly drawn at the barrier and had to he ridden out all tlie way to go with Beau GaHante, who, after giving trouble, secured a flying start. Beau Callante was beaten by -Airing, howj e ver, before they straightened tip, and he weakened into fourth place. The unlucky I horse, however, was Jubilee Song. Drawn i wide out on this angled post, ho was sevorc- | ly buffeted for fully three furlongs, where lie was knocked right hack to I He was flying in tho straight and may have won had lie been able to get up on the inside of Airing. A most premising ing was made hy Unv Boy, who was running on into fifth place. RACING IN DETAIL. KAWA KAWA HURDLES, of £150; second liorse £3O and third £ls.
