BICYCLE TOUR

THROUGH THE NORTH ISLAND. To travel 1340 miles through the North Island on a bicycle with only one puncture, was the experience of Mr Alec Marchant. of Himatangi. Mr Marchant informed a “Standard” representative on Wednesday that he had always desired to make the trip, hut that it was not possible to do so, until just before last Christmas when a change in occupation permitted him the necessary leisure. Leaving Himatangi on January 18 the cyclist followed the main road to Auckland, passing through Sanson, Cardiff, Te Awamutu and Ohinewai. Mr Marchant invariably travelled between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., frequently cycling 90 miles per day and gained 41bs. weight during the trip. When asked what the roads were like, Mr Marchant stated that on the whole they were very good, although there were two bad Rtretehes—one l>etween Rotorua and Gisborne, the other being the second half of the road from Gisborne to Napier.
