SHORTAGE OF STEEL
NEW AVAR SHI PS DELAYED. The shortage of steel, combined with the threat of labour troubles in the in/Justry, is causing anxic.y m the United States. The War Department it IVa suington announces that the construction of six new destroyers and three submarines has been halted by the steel shortage. Fears are expressed that the building of the two new battleships will also be delayed Steel manufacturers who oppose the Walsli-Healey law specifying wage and hour standards refuse lo tender lor steel for Navy needs. At least 12.500 tons are required, but there are no indications of any bids. Not even the keels of the destroyers and submarines have been laid, although some of the contracts were let as early as December 1 last. Rush orders for steel are pouring into the Pittsburgh district, and may cause production to rise to a new peak. The Plate Glass Company is operating to full capacity. Representatives of 60,000 employees in 18 steel plants have , voted to demand pay increases ranging from 60 to 80 cents a day.
