CLAY BIRD SHOOTING.

WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIP. The Easter tournament of the Palmerston North Gun Club, which features the West Coast clay bird championship, opened on Saturday in fine weather and with competitors from a wide area. 'flie first event was a five-bird sweepstake. There were 29 starters, and the pool was divided by eleven of them. Other results were as under:—

First £SU Handicap, 18 birds.—L. Maher (Taumarumn), 13vds, 18; A. Barnard (P.N.), 11yds, 18; M. Kearins (P.N.), 11yds, 17; J. Alills was fourth with 1C breaks. Maher and Barnard divided the first prize. Second £SO Handicap.—W. A'Thomson (P.N.), 14yds, 17; B. Alahcr (Ohingaiti), 13yds, 17; D. M. Oainpbell (Horonui, Hawke’s Bay), 16yds, 17. 'Hie tliree divided the pool. Other good scores were recorded by J. Alills, C. Benton, 11. Anderson and C. E. Webber, each of whom broke 16 birds. 15-bird £1 Sweepstake.—J. Dobson (Hamilton), 12yds, 15; C- Webber (Morrinsville), 12yds, 15. Dobson and Webber divided the pool and other good tallies were secured by A. Barnard, J. Mills, 11. Anderson, 1). M. Campbell, and C. Benton, each of whom broke 14 birds. Yankee Shoot. 10-bird Sweepstake.— E. Groome (Otane), 10. Groome was the onlv “gun” to break the possible. B. Maher, W. A.. Thomson, D. M. Campbell and J. Mills tied for second place with nine birds apiece. Six-bird Practice Shoot; open marks. —J. Malcolm (Taihape), 14yds, 6. Nine of the thirteen starters broke all but one bird. Mr P. A. Meehan, in the absence of the official referee for New Zealand (Mr W. Woolven) occupied the dual position of referee and handicapper, and the tournament secretary was Mr J. B. O’Sullivan.
